    Boris impresses Barnet Cypriots

Conservative candidate for Mayor Boris Johnson spoke "passionately" about his commitment to fighting crime and bringing communities together at a meeting organised by the Conservative Friends of Cyprus yesterday.

Fifty members of the Cypriot community turned up at the Finchley and Golders Green Conservatives headquarters in Ballards Lane last night to hear Mr Johnson speak about his policies.

Replying to questions from the public, Mr Johnson was categoric about the way London streets should be be made safer.

He said: "We need to cut the Mayor's publicity budget and get more police officers on the streets of London. How can cities like New York be safer than London?"

Mr Johnson said he would make alcohol on buses in London a criminal offence and reiterated his commitment to promoting diversity and culture in the city.

Recent polls have indicated incumbent Mayor Ken Livingstone is clawing back the lead Mr Johnson was reported to have, with ICM showing a one point gap between the candidates, but Barnet councillor Andreas Tambourides said that the Conservative candidate had a large number of supporters in the Cypriot community, adding that he spoke "passionately" at the event.

He said: "It went down very well. Everyone very much liked what the prospective candidate had to say about bringing communities together, promoting culture, maintaining diversity and other issues along those lines.

"He sent out a message of unity in London thoughout different cultures. With about 250,000 Cypriots in the UK, and 20,000 in Barnet, the community is very proactive and we like to know who we are voting for, and he put across a very positive message."

Barnet councillor Marina Yannakoudakis added: "As a Londoner, a Conservative and a British Cypriot, I want Boris to win on May 1 for all Londoners.

"London is a great city. I am proud to be a borough councillor, but this election is about making London great for everyone, not carrying on Livingstone's misuse of his office and our city's good name on foreign policy."

The election for Mayor of London will be held on May 1.

How very sad it is that some people are so afronted by London being run by the only prominent politician who doesn't pander exclusively to the needs of middle class, middle England (Barnet residents take note) that they are willing to elect a complete clown in his place.

I don’t care if Boris proposes a policy of slaying of the first born, I will for for him to help get rid of the odious incumbent!

Ooops! Sorry for the typo. I should have said "I will vote for him..."

No, Harold, Ken doesn't pander to the needs of any Englishmen at all, he's far too busy cosying up to extremists like al-Qaradawi and his despotic socialist allies in Venezuela and Cuba to care about the people who were duped into voting for him.

I think you've both illustrated my point perfectly.

    Thanks.

Harold is right. The Labour government has only stayed in power for ten years by pandering to middle class, middle England. Income tax for the wealthy end of the earning spectrum was 60% under Margaret Thatcher, before falling to 40%. After 10 years of Labour government it is still 40%. The need for Labour to resort to stealth taxes speaks for itself. Middle class, middle England is the defining electoral power. Thank God.

Boris really has no idea about the importance of Public Transport. Entertaining as Boris may be on 'Have I got news for You' he would be disastrous for us Londoners who use buses and the tube. Sian Berry will improve London's Bus services and the Tube; make London safer for cyclists and prioritise pedestrians. Boris would be better off playing with his posh friends boating. Do us a favour Boris and paddle back to Henley.

Miranda can you actually read. Instead of resulting to playground name calling and having a go at someone for their background, which is at best a socialist trait (funny how the Green Party are good allies with Red Ken)and get on with promoting your own party.

In recent times Boris has given out what his transport policies are to be and as a 'Green' I would have thought you Wholeheartedly supported him because the words 'hybrid buses' and 'cycle-friendly' were used rather alot!

    Ha ha ha!

    Boris Johnson? Policies?

The buffoon can barely tie his own shoelaces, let alone develop policies.

He's a despicable toffee-nosed Tory puppet thrust to the front of the stage as the mouthpiece for his party.

It's only the aggressive anti-Livingstone London press campaign that has given Johnson any kind of chance in the election.

By the way Susan, if I were you I'd learn to write before criticising others for not being able to read.

If Boris were as stupid as some of the more inane comments have suggested, then how come Ken has seen fit to steal some of Boris' policies?
