    Hale councillor resigns

A Barnet councillor yesterday resigned from her seat with immediate effect.

Councillor Jane Ellison stood down after serving Hale ward since 2006. She was also a member for Mill Hill between 1991 and 1994.

Having moved away from the borough, Ms Ellison said she feels the baton should be passed on to someone who can commit more time to serving Barnet.

She was also selected as a prospective parliamentary candidate for the Conservative party in the marginal Battersea constituency in 2006.

She said: "I very much enjoyed my time in this area, and it was an honour to represent the people of Mill Hill and Edgware.

"However, it is not now possible to represent local people in the way I would want to so I have stepped aside in order that someone new can take up the mantle for Hale."

Ms Ellison has been actively involved with a number of groups and societies in the Mill Hill area, including the Mill Hill Preservation Society and the Hendon Christian Housing Association.

In 1995 she co-founded the Mill Hill Music Festival.

Deputy leader of Barnet Council, and friend, Councillor Matthew Offord said: "I would like to pay tribute to Jane's work for Mill Hill and Edgware over the years.

"She dedicated herself to working for her local area, both on and off the council, and she will be a hard act to follow. I would like to wish Jane the very best of luck for the future."

The seat will remain vacant until a by-election is called.

Perhaps the Tories could winch in the wife or husband of one of their other councillors like they did with Andres Tambourides wife in East Barnet last year?
That's the way they do business, like with the Conway MP guy and his son being paid off.

OOh now now Gary that does sound like sour grapes. Are you sure you are not a disgruntled candidate in disguise?

Cllr Mrs Tambourides is a Councillor in her own right not just because of her husband, they are after all two individuals.

Oh and the issue is not linked to Derek Conway either, in fact they are two very different subjects altogether.

Nonsense Sheila. When Mrs T stood for election she had no previous experience of local politics other than having been mayoress for her husband. At the time of her election I remember her saying she had no particular policies or matters she wanted to look into. Great start. I can't remember hearing of her ever since. I think the election was more than a year ago, so what has she done for her £8,000 or whatever it is she picks up?

I entirely agree with Gary. Get someone in who will vote for the side and do very little -that's the local Tory edict. Let's get this shambolic bunch out of Barnet.

Don't get me wrong Mary, there are some very good Tory councillors in Barnet who do work hard for their constituents and the borough. Mike Freer seems a decent enough guy, and even Matthew Offord might win me over. But there are too many of their colleagues on the gravy train. They contribute little to the community and then their expenses go a small way to see big council tax hikes year in year out.
