The chef duo behind a popular Islington boozer are branching out – by opening a fish bar just up the road.

Ed McIlroy and Jamie Allan, who oversee the kitchen at The Plimsoll in Finsbury Park, have announced that they are opening Tollington’s just off Stroud Green Road.

Promising a relaxed vibe, the restaurant will pay homage to its namesake – the iconic neighbourhood fish and chip shop that used to sit at the site.

The new restaurant will offer a Mediterranean twist however, inspired by regional Spanish coastal dining.

Former patrons of Tollington’s will find some familiar touches once the bar re-opens in June – some tiling and the original chip fryer will remain.

But the team behind the restaurant has still promised to refresh the space, “with a small nod to Spain” in the colour scheme.

Dishes will be seafood-focused including plates of cured, fresh, and fried options, with a small selection of larger dishes including some cuts of meat on a regularly changing menu.

The drinks menu is described as “simple and concise”, with everything available by the glass including beer, wine, port, cider and Spanish vermouth.

On the opening, co-owner Ed said: “Jamie and I have spent a lot of time in Spain with family based there and we just love the no-nonsense way of doing things.

“We want people to come in, have a drink, lean on a ledge and have a quick bite or stay for a while and enjoy some big plates around a table.

“There won’t be any frills, just good food and a place we want locals and visitors to eat, drink and have a good time. It’s as simple as that."

The space will be split in two, with the front bar available for walk-ins and standing guests, while at the back there will be a seated restaurant space. There will also be some outdoor seating.

Tollington’s will be open at 172 Tollington Park from the start of June, Tuesday through to Sunday.

Opening hours will be 6pm to 11pm during the week, 1pm to 11pm on a Saturday, and 12pm to 6pm on a Sunday.
